Title:

[Parsons family photographs of African Americans in Santa Fe, Denver and Southern California]

Abstract:

Snapshots and portraits documenting multiple generations of the African American Parsons family of Santa Fe, New Mexico; Denver, Colorado; Hollywood and perhaps other Southern California locations. Identified individuals include Velma Ruth Parsons (1902-1982), her sisters Marcella Parsons and Roselle Parsons, her brother Lawren Parsons, their father Charles Parsons (1876-1934) and their uncle George Parsons. Snapshots depict everyday domestic scenes, social and leisure outings, residences, pets, automobile trips, etc. Among the Santa Fe images are a few views of the First Ward School, which the sisters attended while living in that city, and the Presbyterian Mission School which Charles and George attended during their childhood. A few group portraits possibly include at least one of the sisters later in life during international travel tours in Taiwan, Japan, India and Greece. Includes many school portraits of young African Americans, some identified. Also includes a few images of unidentified African American men in military uniforms taken during the World War I era; and a studio portrait of an unidentified African American woman taken in Cincinnati in the late 19th century. Other identified persons depicted in a few images include Marilyn Edith Duncan, Edith English, Kaye Parsons, Lottie Adams and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Walker.
